Auckland Maori Culture Tours (full day) so you can experience the taha Maori or Maori side of Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland). You’ll discover a landscape rich with Maori myths and legends and steeped in the history, both ancient and modern, of the tangata whenua (the people of the land).
Visit the region’s important Maori landmarks and monuments. Practise practise some Maori kawa (protocols) and tikanga (culture). Learn about some of the rangatira Maori (Maori leaders) who have shaped our nation’s history.
On our full day Auckland Maori Culture Tours your Kaiarahi Maori (Maori guide) is our Company Director Ceillhe Tewhare Teneti Hema Sperath. Ceillhe is tangata whenua (one of the people of the land). She is a direct descendant of the Maori chiefs Patuone and his brother Tamati Waka Nene, both of whom shaped the Maori and colonial history of New Zealand. Ceillhe is well versed and experienced in Maori culture, traditions and history. She knows and loves her native region with the passion of a true insider and is equally passionate about sharing her culture and her turangawaewae (homeland) with you!
Auckland Maori Culture Tours (full day) highlights include
• Te Wao Nui o Tiriwa, (ancient forest of Tiriwa) the indigenous forest covering the Waitakere Ranges to the west of Auckland. Walk among unique indigenous trees and plants, learn their Maori names and their importance as both food and medicine. Meet some of our shy bush-dwelling native birds. Hear the lore and legends of the bush.
• Te Taihauuru the famous ‘Wild West Coast’ with its the unique black sand beaches, windswept cliffs and roaring surf
• Mount Victoria in Devonport, the final resting place of Patuone, one of the chief negotiators and signatories of Aotearoa/ New Zealand’s founding document. Patuone is one of Ceillhe Tewhare Teneti Sperath (Director of TIME Unlimited Tours) direct ancestors.
• Tamaki Drive with its avenues of glorious native trees and views to the mystical island volcano, Rangitoto
• Maungawhau (Mount Eden) - see the city from the tallest and most dramatic of its ancient volcanoes, then walk on the edge of its beautiful, bush clad crater.
